In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15-Oct. 15, NATA Now is highlighting some of our leaders at the state, district and national levels as they shed light on their volunteer journeys.

Drawn to the profession because of his deep passion for sports and helping people, Kenny Wilka, MEd, LAT, ATC, said athletic training gives him the opportunity to make a tangible difference in others.

Wilka said beyond the competition, dedication and hard work that first inspired him to pursue the profession, athletic training has enabled him to be a part of something bigger than himself – a team and community working toward common goals.

“This profession enables me to support athletes in reaching their full potential, knowing that my contributions are essential to their success and well-being,” he said.

His efforts to advance the profession are reflected in his leadership roles within the Wisconsin Athletic Trainers’ Association, Great Lakes Athletic Trainers’ Association and NATA.

Read on as Wilka discusses how volunteering has expanded his connections and impact.

What was your first volunteer position within the athletic training profession and why did you get involved?

I first volunteered as the WATA southeast representative because the belief that Ryan Wilkinson, EdD, ATC, had in me and our friendship inspired me to contribute to athletic training. His encouragement made me realize the impact I could have by giving back to the athletic training community. It was an opportunity to grow and support others.

Tell us about your current position as District Eleven treasurer and what you hope to accomplish in this role.

As the first District Eleven treasurer, I’ve focused on defining the role and creating systems to ensure financial stability. My goals are to establish a clear framework for future treasurers, update District Eleven’s policies and procedures and leave knowing I’ve made a meaningful contribution to the organization’s success.

Why is representation in leadership important and how does it impact the profession?
Representation in leadership is crucial because volunteer leadership embodies true service to its members, ensuring their needs are prioritized. In athletic training, diversity in representation is vital to ensure every voice is heard, fostering inclusivity and innovation. Leadership shapes our message and direction, guiding the profession's growth and adapting to the evolving needs of the community. By embracing diverse perspectives, athletic training can better serve its members and advance the profession as a whole.

How has volunteering helped you grow personally and professionally?

Volunteering has been a profound experience, reminding me that life is about more than just oneself. It has grounded me personally, allowing me to contribute to something larger than myself. Professionally, volunteering has expanded my network, connecting me with inspiring, motivated and supportive individuals. These relationships have enriched my career, providing opportunities for growth and collaboration. Through volunteering, I’ve gained a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment, both personally and professionally.

What’s your fondest memory of serving so far?

There’s no singular memory. However, I have a collection of moments created by volunteering, allowing for comradeship with all the individuals I have worked with and enabling me to give back to the athletic training profession.

What advice do you have for other athletic trainers who want to give back to the profession?

For athletic trainers looking to give back, I’d advise starting by identifying what truly motivates you within the profession. Whether it's mentoring, advocacy or leadership, find a niche that aligns with your passions. Seek opportunities to volunteer, whether locally, regionally or nationally, and don’t be afraid to step into roles that challenge you. Building connections with like-minded professionals with different backgrounds can amplify your impact. Remember, giving back not only benefits others, but also enriches your own growth and fulfillment.
