The January NATA News featured an article by the Transition to Practice Workgroup, detailing its findings in relation to helping athletic trainers successfully transition into the field of their employment. The article discussed various aspects of transitioning to practice and recommendations for the individual, employer and professional education program.
One element discussed was orientation. Successful transition to practice must include both site and setting specific orientation provided by the employer that is ongoing and begins at a reasonably early time following the employee’s start date. This orientation cannot be prescriptive. The workgroup created a checklist that includes aspects that should be covered at a minimum. NATA has made this new hire checklist available to all members to help them when bringing on a new athletic training employee.
