Much of the International Committee’s responsibilities consist of determining global standards for athletic training education. In January, NATA Director of Member Services & Business Development John Honaman represented both the IC and the World Federation of Athletic Training & Therapy (WFATT) as he met with educators from Beijing Sport University and National Taiwan Sport University in Taipei. Honaman said these newly established relationships with AT programs abroad will assist in moving the profession forward and ensuring that ATs – regardless of where they are in the world – have been trained to provide a certain standard of health care.
In addition to meeting with Chinese and Taiwanese leadership Honaman met AT students like Xin Xiao Zhang, a master's graduate of Beijing Sport University whose therapy program enabled aerial skier Han Xiaopeng to earn a gold medal at the 2006 Olympics in Turin. "Xin, a product of the one-child system, was strongly encouraged by family to move to Beijing to study and later work at BSU," Honaman said.
