NATA Members Form Interest Group to Support Interprofessional Education and Practice

January 12, 2015 by Todd Christman
Early in 2014, at the request of the NATA Executive Committee for Education (ECE), a work group came together to write a paper on Interprofessional Education and Practice (IPEP). The writers of the IPEP paper felt there was a need to continue collaboration in this area. NATA recognizes the value of targeted groups as a way for NATA members who have common interests to organically share information and develop a sense of community. Therefore, the IPEP interest group will serve as the interest group pilot for the NATA. The work of the IPEP interest group will center on Interprofessionalism in both education and clinical practice.

The purpose of the IPEP interest group is to form a community of colleagues, provide support for NATA members and advocate for the profession of Athletic Training in the areas of Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Interprofessional Practice (IPP). This group will work toward facilitating collaboration-ready interprofessional practitioners, particularly by way of professional preparation.

The structure, function and role of the interest group will be influenced by its membership. Initial support from the NATA will primarily be based in the promotion of the group and provision of a means for communication between group members.

The initial meeting of the IPEP interest group will be on Wednesday, January 28  from Noon – 1 p.m. EST. During this virtual meeting the group will begin to develop its organizational structure, scope and objectives. If you plan to attend, please RSVP by e-mail to knowledgeinitiatives@nata.org and you will be sent further information on how to access the virtual meeting.

As the IPEP interest group develops and succeeds, members of NATA staff will be observing our progress and working with the group. Staff will use this pilot to develop guidelines and resources for the formation of future NATA interest groups.
