New Resource: Sports Medicine Legal Digest

March 21, 2017 by JordanG

NATA is launching a new digital publication in April focused on legal issues relevant to athletic trainers. The Sports Medicine Legal Digest is a quarterly digital newsletter exclusively for NATA members that has been created to:

  • Keep athletic trainers informed on current legal issues that could affect their daily practice
  • Help ATs protect themselves from future liability by educating them on current issues
  • Support and help to make the case for AT value and impact on work, life and sport

Each issue of the publication will feature legal case summaries relevant to sports medicine health care professionals, a column from the NATA Professional Responsibility Committee addressing ethical dilemmas and a Q&A with a health care provider occupying a unique role related to liability within sports medicine and athletic training.

The first issue to be published April 2017 features an interview with David Cohen, ATC, Esq., who worked as an athletic trainer before going to law school and eventually landing his current job as the general counsel for the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His interview discusses how his background in athletic training influences his role with the Bucs and why he still maintains his athletic training certification to this day.

Jeff Konin, PhD, PT, ATC, FACSM, and Tim Neal, MS, AT, ATC, contributed a column about standing orders that explains what they mean and why they are so important to athletic trainers.

The newsletter will be published in the form of a digital magazine, similar to the online version of the NATA News. Stay tuned to NATA communications in April for notification that the digest has been published and is available as an online resource.
