The lymphatic system is extensively involved in all soft tissue injury associated with orthopedic injury. Although there is Level 2 or moderate evidence to support the use of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) techniques for improving patient and disease-oriented outcomes for orthopedic conditions, including edema, ROM and ADLs, treatment approaches for orthopedic patients are limited. Lymphatic Balancing (LB) is evaluation and treatment approach that was developed to meet this need. LB uses osteopathic pumping and manual lymphatic drainage techniques to relieve lymphatic congestion throughout the body, remove accumulated waste and edema in the local tissues, and remove barriers to lymphatic flow. These gentle, specific wave-like movements stimulate fluid motion and aid in the re-circulation of the venous and lymphatic flow. By assisting in the removal of waste products associated with inflammation and injury, healing can occur. Being first line providers, Athletic Trainers are in a unique position to use LB to address the initial stages of inflammation and swelling to encourage decreased healing times, improved function, and quicker return to sport.
