Education Research Forum Description/Gap
The Education Research Forum presented by the NATA Education Advancement Committee is geared toward novice and existing educational researchers who want to continue to enhance their knowledge and skills related to educational research methodologies, scholarship, and grant submission processes. Attending this forum will help participants to advance professional and personal practice, to network and to learn from experts in the field and from each other.
The Education Research Forum is conveniently timed so that ATEC attendees may attend the forum prior to the start of ATEC.

Session 1: What is Educational Research?
Objectives:
Upon completion of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
- Define educational research and its purpose.
- Identify the various methodologies utilized in educational research.
- Describe the priorities in athletic training educational research.
Description:
Education research is the scientific field of study that examines education and learning processes and the human attributes, interactions, organizations, and institutions that shape educational outcomes. Effective education research must address the interests and needs of educators and stakeholders including students, clinicians and preceptors in order to improve educational processes and outcomes.
Session 2: Using Outcomes for Educational Research
Objectives:
Upon completion of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
- Identify ways in which outcomes can be incorporated into research and publications.
- Identify which outcomes could be collected to advance research goals.
- Describe how to use a quality improvement plan and outcomes to further educational research.
Description:
After learning about education research, metrics such as educational outcomes, provide a means for measuring success and improving program quality. Outcomes extend beyond program improvement and can be incorporated into educational research. Outcomes research can provide a platform for studying educational initiatives. The purpose of this presentation will be to show how educational outcomes can be used to further one’s research agenda.
Session 3: Navigating/Balancing Faculty Responsibilities
Objectives
Upon completion of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
- Identify research qualities unique to educational research.
- Discuss ways to balance the varying roles associated with higher education.
- Discuss strategies to balance teaching and educational research.
- Discuss how to balance education research requirements for tenure and promotion and home life/outside interests.
Description:
There are many nuances involved in writing educational research manuscripts. Novice researchers and even experienced researchers who are new to educational research may have difficulty navigating the writing and peer review process in this arena. The purpose of this presentation is to highlight unique qualities of educational research, provide tips for writing a manuscript specific to educational research, and navigate the peer review process.
Athletic training faculty must successfully balance a myriad of job related responsibilities, particularly related to tenure and promotion requirements in terms of research. These roles often extend beyond the traditional tenants of tenure and promotion, including administrative and accreditation expectations. Pressures to successfully navigate these roles along with outside interests, personal hobbies, and family obligations can lead to conflicts and strain. There will be a discussion on how much time and energy can and should be invested in these areas.
Session 4: Grant Development
Objectives:
Upon completion of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
- Identify funding opportunities for educational research
- Describe fundamental components of grant application
- Describe keys to success and common mistakes
Description:
Research Funding Proposals (RFP) for educational research incorporate methodologies often unique to educational research. In addition, defining aims, scope of the study, and variables are often misinterpreted in the grant writing and review process. The purpose of this presentation is to promote educational research and to assist athletic training educators with writing educational research grant proposals. This session will also review common mistakes and review strategies to strengthen grant proposals.
Session 5: Grant Development Roundtable Panel
Description: This panel is a continuation of the previous Grant Development session. It’s the opportunity to ask questions from all of the speakers about grant development. Speakers will also field questions from the audience on other topics covered during earlier sessions.
